Step for step, mile for mile, walking is one of the easiest ways to increase your physical activity and improve your overall health.
More people every day are stepping out for the "health of it" - the pure enjoyment of a physical activity that can easily become a part of a daily routine without being difficult, time-consuming or costly. Besides being an enjoyable, scenic mode of transportation, putting your best foot forward can improve your fitness, health and sense of well-being. By walking 30 to 60 minutes daily and increasing your steps per day you can:
- Boost energy, reduce stress and improve your mood
- Help your heart, lungs and muscles work more efficiently
- Reduce blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- Help reduce the risk of chronic diseases, heart disease and strokes
- Help prevent and control diabetes
- Strengthen bones and help prevent or control osteoporosis
- Improve the mobility and stability of joints
- Maintain a healthy weight and a positive body image, especially when combined with healthy eating
- Enjoy a pleasurable activity while you socialize with family or friends
The benefits of walking are amazing- it can help your body resist and fight illnesses such as breast cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Regular walking can strengthen your heart, lungs, bones, and muscles.
Health Canada recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity (walking, bicycling, and yard work) on most days.
